Master Center for Addiction Medicine Offers Medication-Assisted Treatment in Greater Richmond and Beyond
The Medication-Assisted Treatment program by Master Center combines medication, such as Suboxone, with behavioral therapy to treat the effects of addiction comprehensively.

Master Center, a growing outpatient addiction treatment center with headquarters in Glen Allen, offers a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program that combines FDA-approved medications, such as Suboxone and Vivitrol, administered alongside counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a well-rounded approach to treating both opioid addiction and alcohol dependence.

“It’s important to know that Medication-Assisted Treatment is not merely replacing one addictive substance with another,” said Dr. James Thompson, co-founder and chief medical officer at Master Center. “Instead, the MAT program at the Master Center for Addiction Medicine is designed to address the effects of addiction comprehensively, dealing effectively with the physical difficulties of overcoming drug dependence through medication in tandem with other therapies.”

This is especially helpful for treating opioid use disorders, as patterns of opioid use over a sustained period often result in severe distress and physical impairment. The body experiences extreme withdrawal when the user ceases taking opioids. By removing the physical and mental side effects caused by withdrawal, patients participating in the MAT program at the Master Center have demonstrated better progress and maintained sobriety. While MAT is more common for treating patients addicted to opioids, it has successfully treated a range of substance issues, including addictions to alcohol and tobacco.

“Medication-Assisted Treatment for people that suffer from opioid addiction can prevent both withdrawal symptoms and cravings. MAT stops users from being in danger when they cease using opioids,” said Dr. Thompson.

In addition to the MAT program, patients at the Master Center also have an opportunity to participate in other addiction treatment programs including intensive outpatient therapy programs, detox programs, sustained recovery programs, the family program, as well as the insight programs. In addition, Master Center offers a range of integrated services including specialty therapies, treatment consultation and referral, addiction psychiatry, group and individual therapy sessions, peer recovery coaching, as well as addiction evaluation services. All of the programs offered at the Master Center are tested and trusted to deliver the best results possible when treating the complex disease of addiction.
